What is product consulting?
It's a completely valid question. Product management is a job that requires deep inside knowledge about the product, the team, and the market. It is an art and a science. So how does product consulting work? Is it effective? I love working with startups, my goal is to be a resource for the CEO or the product leader, to help them avoid the common pitfalls that I've seen teams/companies fall into from my experiences. While there are lots of best practices, I believe every company and team is unique. So I don't follow a formula, I don't have a template. My relationship and work with each company is unique and specific to their needs and vision.
Some common ways I can help.
1-1 Product Coaching
Leadership can be lonely, especially when you are the founder or the head of product at a startup. Who do you talk to about your concerns and questions? Your employees will give you feedback but you know that they hold back. Your peers may not be have any more experience than you do. What if you had a couple hours every week to talk to someone about your work? What if they could give you feedback on long term questions like how and when should I scale my team as well as help you talk through near term problems like your next board meeting, your product roadmap and how to think about product strategy for the quarter?
Roadmap and Strategy
You have a great PM and engineering team, but you're worried that the roadmap is too short term and reactive. How can you effectively create a product roadmap and strategy that aligns with the company strategy? What if you had someone who has done this hundreds of times and who can help validate your roadmap with the team? Then what if they could help you communicate this to the team and help you create an effective process and framework to this in the future?
User Research
Intuition is great, numbers are great too, but too often we either don't have the tools or the bandwidth to use one of the greatest resources in product decisions, user feedback. What if you had someone who has seen and done user research at scale and who can help you talk to your users? Who can give you insights on why they don't tap that button or why they don't return after install? What if you knew who LOVES your product and why?
Design and Product reviews
You've never done product or design reviews before but the company is growing and stopping by the designer's desk isn't scaling anymore. How do you evaluate a product change or a design? How do you build best practices to give effective feedback to the team? How does it fit into the larger picture of the roadmap and strategy? What if you had someone who can help you set up product reviews for your startup and sit in to help with all of those questions and more?
Recruiting
How and when should you hire a product team? What do you look for in a great PM? How do you effectively interview a PM or a product leader? Should I hire someone senior? What does that mean? What if you had someone who has done all those things to help you through it?
